What are meta games?
In mobile gaming, the meta refers to the parts of gameplay such as systems, mechanics, and loops that a player repeats to make progress.
Oftentimes, the strategies transcend the rules of the game, mostly derived from player interaction. It’s an effective way to achieve the goal of the game, whether it’s to beat other players or beat the game itself.
How do meta games work?
Meta-games are created with the intention of providing long-term goals for players, and in doing so, keeps them engaged longer. For example, a meta-game may have players take advantage of strategy and their level of understanding of it in order to define their actions and progress forward in the game. It’s closely in tune with strategy, timing, and approach to determine how far you get in the game. These may include which characters, weapons, or maps you choose. All of these factors, plus your knowledge of them affect the outcome of the game.
